Keith Snell’s Scale Skills – Level 2 expands the student’s technical vocabulary by introducing more keys, additional minor scales, and slightly longer patterns.
1. Major Scales (1 octave, hands separate)
Typically included:
-
A major, E major, D major, G major, C major (depending on exact edition)
Keys now include two or three sharps/flats.
Focus remains on:
-
correct fingering
-
smooth transitions
-
steady, controlled playing
2. Minor Scales (natural and harmonic)
Students usually encounter:
-
A minor, E minor, D minor (1 octave)
Level 2 is often where harmonic minor appears for the first time.
3. Primary Triads (I–IV–V7)
In the same keys as the scales:
-
blocked chords
-
simple chord progressions
-
hands separate
4. Cadences
Basic cadential patterns, expanding the harmonic vocabulary:
-
I–IV–I
-
I–V7–I
-
and sometimes IV–I or V–I patterns for ear training
5. Broken Triads / Arpeggio Preparation
More elaborate broken-chord patterns than Level 1, still very accessible:
-
root–third–fifth–third
-
root–fifth–third–fifth
These pave the way toward full arpeggios in later levels.
➡️ The emphasis is purely technical and pattern-based.
