Robert Schumann composed these three Sonatas for the Young, op. 118 in 1853. The three sonatas are dedicated to his eldest daughters Julie, Elise and Marie. Schumann composed these sonatas with a pedagogical aim, each sonata being in fact a character study of each daughter.
